Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda is electedThe Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda is elected to the Legislative council by defeating his Congress Rival candidate Anand Gaddadevaramath by a margin of 54 votes. While Gowda secured 123 votes with his party having 120 members, Congress candidate polled 69 votes out of the party's strength of 71. The Janata Dal-Secular has 26 members who abstained from voting and there are 6 Independents excluding one independent member who is a minister. The assembly has 225 members.
The election was necessitated as Gowda was a not a member of State Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council. A person who is not a member of any of the houses has to get elected to one of the houses within 6 months of assuming office as minister. He became Chief Minister after B S Yeddyurappa was forced out due to the corruption charges against him.
