Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda is elected

The Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda is elected to the Legislative council by defeating his Congress Rival candidate Anand Gaddadevaramath by a margin of 54 votes. While Gowda secured 123 votes with his party having 120 members, Congress candidate polled 69 votes out of the party's strength of 71. The Janata Dal-Secular has 26 members who abstained from voting and there are 6 Independents excluding one independent member who is a minister. The assembly has 225 members.

The election was necessitated as Gowda was a not a member of State Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council. A person who is not a member of any of the houses has to get elected to one of the houses within 6 months of assuming office as minister. He became Chief Minister after B S Yeddyurappa was forced out due to the corruption charges against him.

Let us hope his election amounts to stability of the government in the state and now he can devote more time to developmental work which suffers most when there is no stability.
