Jayaprakash Hegde of Congress wrests Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha seat

The result of the election to the Lok Sabha from the Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency has come on 21-3-12. The Congress candidate Jayaprakash Hegde won the seat with a margin of 45724 votes defeating his nearest rival Sunil Kumar of BJP. Mr Hegde polled 3,98,723 votes against Sunil Kumar's 3,52,999. The JD (S) candidate Boje Gowda came as third with 72,080 votes polled.

Mr K Jayaprakash Hegde was born in Kuntapur Taluk of Udupi District in Karnataka to Mr. and Mrs. Chandrasekhar Hegde .Jayaprakash is a practicing advocate of the High Court. He joined politics at an early stage. Mr Jayaprakash Hegde was a M LA of the Karnataka State Assembly from 1994 to 2008 and was Minster for Ports and Fisheries from 1994-1998.

This victory of Hegde is a much needed morale booster to the Congress both at the state and National level, especially after the party's debacle in the Northern states and Andhra. Presently the position of BJP in fighting has helped the Congress. At least now the Congress has to start working earnestly to maintain this gain it achieved for the future.

The win of Sh Hegde is convincing. It may be a morale booster but may not necessarily be symptomatic of some change in favour of Congress. It is significant otherwise because of the margin of win and also because of the fact that by elections in states are normally won by the candidate of the party in power. This has happened in Gujarat also. Let us only hope that the Congress party starts building up in both the states from here onward as suggested by you.
