    Mysore: The city of palaces and silk saris

    Indian land is rich of tourist places. From Jammu and Kashmir in the north to Kanyakumari in the South and from Gujarat in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east there are a number of places famous for their uniqueness.In Karnataka Mysore city is one of them. The name Mysore is an anglicised version of Mahishuru, which means the abode of Mahisha. Mahisha stands for Mahishura, a demon from the Hindu mythology.

    This city is famous for its Dasara (Dussehra) festival when festivities take place for 10 days. The center of the Dasara festives is Amba Vilas palace (also known as Mysore palace.) The Jayalakshmi Vilas, the Jaganmohana Palace, Lalitha Mahal Palace, Chamundeshwari temple, atop the Chamundi Hills, Cheluvamba Mansion, Rajendra Palace, and St. Philomena's Church are popular tourist places in this city. Mysore city is also a centre for meditation and yoga. Health tourism also attracts to a large number of foreign visitors to Mysore city.
    Mysore is situated on the bank of Cauvery. Krishnaraja Sagara dam across Cauvery river was built by famous engineer Sir M. Visvesvarayya. Adjoining the dam is the world famous Brindavan Gardens where the beautiful musical fountain attracts people from both far and near.

    Biligiri Ranga (B.R.) Hills, Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta and the hill station of Ooty (in Tamil Nadu) and Madikeri are located near Mysore. Besides these places, Sriranapatna and Somanathapura, both places of historic importance, are situated near Mysore. For wildlife enthusiasts there is Nagarhole and Bandipur wildlife sanctuaries, and Ranganthittu and Kokkrebellur bird sanctuaries.
    Other religious places near Mysore are Nanjanagud and Bylakuppe. Gaganachukki and Bharachukki (Shivanasmudra or Bluff) waterfalls are located near Mysore.

    There are many information technology companies in Mysore. Infosys has set up one of the largest training centers for its information technology engineers and for corporate training.Software Paradigm Inc., Wipro Technologies, Comat Technologies, L&T, JK Tires, and Excel soft Technologies are among prominent companies/industries in Mysore .

    Mysore is known world over for its silk saris generally called Mysore silk saris.Mysore is also famous for the popular art form of Mysore Painting.
