Makara Sankranthi – The festival of Thanksgiving.

Makara Sankranthi is celebrated on the occassion of welcoming of new harvest.


Makara Sankranthi is one of the major festivals of India and celebrated throughout the country every year in the midst of January to say exactly on 14 January. In southern states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh Sankranthi festival is celebrated for four days as a remark of thanks giving for a plentiful harvest.

Significance of Sankranthi.

Makara Sankranthi event signifies the end of winter and the oncoming spring season. It is considered that Sun is entered into Northern Hemisphere on Sankranthi day, which is called Uttarayana.

Many legends are prevalent regarding Sankranthi festival.

According to Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamaha had chosen this day to end his life.Another legend says the demons were buried beneath the Mandara Mountain by Lord Vishnu, which indicates the victory of righteousness over evil.According to another legend, Lord Shani is visited by his father, the Sun God on Sankranthi day irrespective of their difference of opinions.

On Sankranthi day people wear beautiful dresses and visit their relatives and friends, and exchange greetings and gifts in Karnataka. The exchange of gifts include a mixture of fried sesame seeds, pieces of dry coconuts, molasses, fried peanuts and grams etc. Exchange of freshly harvested sugarcane pieces is the most popular tradition of Makara Sankranthi. Domestic cows and bulls are honored with garlands on Makara Sankranthi as a part of celebrations. Their horns are painted with beautiful colors.

On the occasion of Makara Sankranthi special recipe Pongal is made to serve. In this they make Sweet Pongal and Khara Pongal
