Girish Karnad - Famous personality of Karnataka.


Girish Karnad is one of the famous personalities in Kannada Literature. He has a multifaced role. He is a a contemporary writer, playwright, actor and movie director in Kannada language. The honour of getting the hightest literary award of Jnanpith Award was given to him and he was the latest seven recipients.

Birth place of Girish Karnad was born in born in Matheran, Maharashtra, into a Konkani-speaking familyon May 19, 1938. Girish Karnad's initial schooling was in Marathi. As a youngster, Karnad was an ardent admirer of Yakshagana and the theater in his village.

Girish Karnad got his bachelor's degree from Karnatak College Dharwar known as Karnataka College Dharwad, in 1958. Upon graduation Karnad went to England and studied at Lincoln and Magdalen colleges in Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar(1960-63), earning his Master of Arts degree in philosophy, political science and economics.

Karnad is most famous as a playwright. Girish Karnad's plays, written in Kannada, have been widely translated into English and all major Indian languages. Girish Karnad is internationally known as a playwright, but is also a highly talented film-maker, a versatile actor, an able cultural administrator, a noted communicator and a person of wide accomplishments and interests. Based on his serious explorations of folklore, mythology and history, the subject of his plays reflect the problems and challenges of contemporary life, and endeavour to forge a link between the past and the present. First play of Girish Karnad , "Yayati" (1961), ridicules the ironies of life through characters in Mahabharata and became an instant success, immediately translated and staged in several other Indian languages. "Tughlaq" (1964), his best loved play, established Karnad as one of the most promising playwrights in the country. A large number of his kannada plays have been translated by Dr. Bhargavi P Rao

First movie of Girish Karnad as director came with the movie VamshaVruksh, based on a Kannada novel by S.L. Bhairappa. The movie VamshaVruksh won several national and international awards. Before VamshaVruksh, Girish Karnad acted in a movie called Samskara, based on a novel by U.R. Ananthamurthy and directed by Pattabhirama Reddy. That movie won the first President's Golden Lotus Award for Kannada cinema. Later, Karnad directed several movies in Kannada and Hindi. Some of Girish Karnad's famous Kannada movies include Tabbaliyu neenade magane, Ondanondu Kaaladalli, Cheluvi and Kadu.

Hindi movies of Girish Karnad include Utsav, Godhuliand the recent Pukar. A recently acclaimed movie by Karnad is Kanooru Heggaditi, based on a novel by Kannada writer Kuvempu. Girish Karnad's role of the ruthless cricket coach too got him critical acclaim in IQBAL written brilliantly by Vipul K Rawal He has been criticised by the eminent Kannada novelist S.L. Bhairappa for being untrue to history in order to curry favor with the establishment. He recently acted in the movie called 8*10 tasveer, with lead actor Akshay kumar.
