2010 Ranji Trophy Final Overview: Mumbai V/s Karnataka

Mumbai have 38 Ranji Trophy titles to their name and they will be looking to claim the silverware yet again. It won’t be an easy task, though, with a young Karnataka team eager to grab it from them!

Mumbai is lead by Wasim Jaffer. Besides the captain, the team has plenty of experienced players like Ajit Agarkar and Ramesh Powar who have also played for the national team. Then they have the highest run-getter of this Ranji season: the prolific Ajinkya Rahane whose thirst for big scores is always unquenched. They have the option of playing both their key spinner, Powar and Iqbal Abdullah, but could likely take on an extra medium-pacer.

Karnataka, on the other hand, has only captain Robin Uthappa and Sunil Joshi as their experienced players. Left-arm spinner Joshi will definitely be playing a crucial role, as Karnataka will aim to take quick wickets. The team’s pace attack is also fearsome, with R.Vinay Kumar and debutant Abhimanyu Mithun both taking the slots of the top bowlers in this Ranji season; Vinay Kumar has taken a whopping 39 wickets, while Abhimanyu is just behind with 38 scalps. The weakness of the team is primarily in their fielding, having dropped numerous catches in the earlier games. Also, the ‘Wall’ is sorely missed, with Rahul Dravid doing duty for the national team against Bangladesh.

The pitch has been adjudged to be full of bounce, with a slight green tinge. So the pacers may well rule the roost.
