Makar Sankranti is one of the auspicious festival of Karnadigas. This falls on the 14th of January every year. One of the first festival which comes beginning of the New Year.
People visit temples and make their day auspicious. Since this is a harvest festival, Sugarcane, ground nut, sweet potatoes etc are cooked on this day. Mainly all Kannadigas exchange Yellu – a mixture of fried sesame, peanuts and gram with jaggery and copra. These are packed in small packets and distributed to all relatives, friends and neighbors on the day. The festive feast includes rice and moong dal kichdi (both sweet and salt), curries with freshly harvested field beans, sweet potato, sweet pumpkin, etc.
