It is one of the common folk art in the coastal districts of Karnataka and malenadu. I has been estimated by historians that the period of the birth of Yakshagana was during 11th to 16th century. Yakshagana must have been established in the time of famous Yakshagana poet Parthisubba (1600 AD) who also wrote the Ramayana in Yakshagana.

Currently there are about 30 full professional companies, and about 200 amateur artists in Yakshagana. Professional groups to tour, from November to May, giving more than 200 shows, each show runs one whole night.

There are about one thousand professional artists and many more fans. There are also shows during the wet season. Together we can say that nearly 12,000 shows of Yakshagana performances can be witnessed in Karnataka each year.
