Work Place Ergonomics!

Remember grandparents and parents telling you to sit straight, stand straight and have your chin up always? They were not preaching this without reason and experience.

Our bodies are supported by a spine which looks like an inverted S from the side. The spine consists of a series of bones called vertebrae joined by discs which act as cushions and provide lubrication to movements of spine.

It is important to be conscious of body posture and ensure that the S curve is not burdened too much. It is extremely important for IT professionals to be aware of their body posture so that the spine is not affected.

People who work on their laptops and computers can practice following tips (called workplace ergonomics):

Use a straight chair shaped as inverted S and with no arm rests for sitting.

Use a ergonomic key board and chair set up which has a rotating pad for mouse. The keyboard and mouse board are the level of few inches above knees. The monitor should be at 22 inches away from eyes and the top of the monitor should be at same level as eyes.

If standing for long time ensure that the shoulder is stretched backwards and tin is tucked in as much as possible.

Take breaks every 1 hour or more frequently to stretch and be flexible. Use stairs to your floor and do not get used to elevators. Do not keep water bottles as frequently going to water coolers/taps/refrigerator itself is a good walk and break from laptops/computers.
