One of the places we visited during a weekend was Ranganathittu a bird sanctuary located 18 KM from Mysore. The experience was just exhilarating.

Ranganathittu is a bird sanctuary located around 18km form Mysore and has the exotic collection of birds in Karnataka. It is a collection of few islands on river Cauvery. This place is formed on a small dam across river Cauvery.

The sanctuary has the following aspects for sheer environment

A collection of islands that can be seen by a boat trip on river Cauvery. Each of the islands has a huge collection of various types of birds. You can see storks, cormorants, darters, herons and kingfishers. Just a awesome collection of exotics birds in one place. The place is small of roughly 1 KM but enjoyable.

You can also catch sight of number of crocodiles in the waters. Seeing crocodiles so close up was bit frightening.

You will have to purchase tickets for the boat ride. There is small restaurant near the lake for light snacks and drinks.

The best season to visit the sanctuary is May-September and October. It tends to get overcrowded as day progresses, so leave bangalore by 6 AM so that you can be in the queue by 8 OR 8:30. You can spend most part of a day at this place.
For the amateur bird watchers and photographers you will have a great time if you have a high tech camera, video. Do take your time to look around and catch every thing for pleasure viewing later.
