What unfolded in Maharashtra, namely the Adarsh land scam involving Ashok Chavan and his subsequent ouster as Chief Minister, is now dramatically being repeated in the southern State of Karnataka. Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has been under great pressure to step down, following allegations allotting prime land to his relatives.

BJP President Nitin Gadkari has the unenviable task of diplomatically booting out B.S.Yeddyurappa from the Chief Minister's seat. When news of the land scam broke, Yeddyurappa's family was forced to surrender the land. However, Yeddyurappa defiantly refused to resign from the CM's post. He repeatedly declared "Why should I quit?". Quit he will have to, in the light of the BJP party officials not wanting to have a land-scam-tainted leader at the helm.

Adding to the excitement was a sting operation conducted by a Kannada TV channel, revealing tourism minister G Janardhana Reddy allegedly arranging for the ouster of the Chief Miniser Yeddyurappa.

The question that now arises is: who will be the new Karnataka Chief Minister, once Yeddyurappa is ousted? When Maharashra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan was ousted, the Congress party appointed Prithviraj Chavan as the new CM due to his scam-free 'clean' image. In Karnataka, too, the BJP will be looking for a squeaky clean person to head the Govt. Speculations are rife that law minister Suresh Kumar will be the likely new Chief Minister of Karnataka. It has also been reported that rural development and panchayatraj minister, Jagadish Shettar may be appointed as Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Whoever it will be, it is likely that Yeddyurappa will insist that he be allowed to choose his successor as he would want somebody from his own community at the top post.
