This article gives information about the structure of power sector in Karnataka. And gives the exact picture how power sector works in Karnataka and what are the function of generating, transmission and distribution companies

Structure of Power Sector in Karnataka
Divisions of Power Sector in Karnataka
Karnataka Power Sector has divided into four sections.
1.Generation
2.Transmission
3.Distribution. (also called as ESCOMS ,i.e.Energy Supply Compnies)
4.Power Company of Karnataka Limited.
And one independent body to control power sector litigations Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission. (KERC) -http://www.kerc.org/
KERC regulates all aspects of the electricity sector in an objective,To safeguard consumers' interests.To ensure reliable, least cost power supply to consumers.

Generation of Power sector in Karnataka
Generation companies have to generate electricity and sell to distribution companies.
The Generation companies includes both government and private companies.
Government companies of the power sectors in Karnataka are
a.Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL)
b.Central Generating Stations (CGS) are maintained by Government of India (NTPC,NHPC,NPC).
c.Independent Power Producers (IPPs) e.g.TATA POWER,JSW Energy,UPCL etc.
d.Non-conventional Energy Sources (Wind,Solar).
Generating companies(Except Non-conventional Energy sources) generates power at 11kv voltage level and steps up to 110Kilo volts,220kilo volts,400kilo volts (as desired by technical department)by using step up power transformers.then transfers to KPTCL.

Transmission of Power sector in Karnataka
Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL)- http://www.kptcl.com/
Transmission company have to transfer power from generating companies to distribution companies and charge only transmission charges to distribution companies.
KPTCL receives power from generating companies at 110Kilo volts,220kilo volts,400kilo volts level and transfers power through Aluminium Steel reinforced conductors and then steps down to 66kilovolts, 33kilo volts, 11kilo volts by using step down power transformers.(as desired by technical department)

Distribution Companies of Power sector in Karnataka
Distribution companies shall buy power from generating companies and distribute the power to end consumers at competitive prices.
Distribution Companies receives power at 33Kilo volts,11Kilo volts voltage level and distributes the power in 33Kilo volts and 11Kilo volts level to industries and Heavy Commercial building and distributes in 440v,230v level to domestic consumers.
Karnataka Distribution system are divided into five major companies.

c.Official website of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM)- http://www.mesco.in/

e.Official website of Hubli Electricity Supply Company. (HESCOM)- http://www.hescom.co.in/
4. Official website of Power Company of Karnataka Limited (PCKL) - http://www.pckl.co.in/
PCKL look after Power Trading,New Project Development and initiates power procurement from generating companies behalf of distribution companies.
