The Panchanga information:

On the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Shravana month, Krishna paksha, Rohini Nakshatra, Ashtami day-Gokulashtami, Krishnastami is celebrated in the south India. In the north India it is popularly known as Janmastami. It is celebrated on 21st August 2011, by one community of hindus and other celebrate the Tholappar Krishna Jayanthi on 22nd August.

Details of the festival

Lord Krishna's birth is celebrated to rejoice the birth of lord krishna which also signifies the welcoming of a new born in the family. On this day the parents dress their children like the god lord krishna to see his tantrums and enjoy. The family members prepare lots of eatables like chakkali, kodabale, rave onde, vade, saggige, coconut burfi and many more items. Avalaki(beaten rice) is most favourite for the lord as it reminds us the story of his close friend classmate sudhama who become rich after presenting a handful of avalaki. These eatables along with few fruits and vegetables are hung in the round circle which will be kept above. This resembles the kalla krishna trying to eat the bene(made from curds)from the pot. The Lord sri krishna is kept on a table below decorated with flowers, tulasi which is prominent in his pooja and lightings.

Colourful rangolis are drawn in front of the house and tulasi plant, foot steps are drawn to welcome the lord. Devotional songs are sung with the Ashtoras after the Astami nakshtra is born.
