North Canara located in the southern part of Karnataka is popularly known as the land of variety especially for the dishes prepared by the natives.
Different variety of herbs and shrubs are utilized to prepare a special kind of dish called "tambuli" which is can be done by grinding the leaves, herbs and shrubs with adding buttermilk and right amount of spices. One such dish is "majige palja" - buttermilk rasam.
This recipe is generally prepared in winter season as its hot and would best suit with rice. It's a best remedy for people suffering from fever as this recipe is extremely tasty and stimulates the taste buds. Garlic work as an agent to neutralise acidity. Therefore it's healthy and yummy!!!
Majige palja exclusive!!!
Ingredients needed:

Garlic – 5 pieces
Urad dal (udina bele in kannada) – 1 teaspoon
Mustard - 1 teaspoon
Asfoetida( ingu) – a pinch
Green chillies – 3,4
Dry chillies- 2,3
Huli pudi ( this powder gives a sour taste to the dishes which is added to many dishes prepared in this part of Karnataka) – 1 teaspoon
Salt and sugar for taste
Water – around two cups
Curry leaves
Butter milk – ¼ of a cup.
How to prepare?
In the beginning please light the stove…… he he he , I think I achieved in tickling your funny bones. Okay let's come to the point. Place the pan on the stove and pour oil. Add garlic and fry till the garlic turns golden brown and also add mustard, urad dal, asafoetida, green chillies, dry chillies, huli pudi, curry leaves and fry for some time. Add water, salt, sugar and bring it to boil. Let this mixture boil for 5 whole minutes and then switch of the stove. After the mixture is cooled add butter milk and make sure you boil the rasam only for two minutes. Serve it hot with rice. Mixed vegetable pickle would be a great combination.
Simple yet elegant is the spirit of Kannadigas.
