Shortcut keys available on keyboard

Most of us work with computers these days and have become more used to mouse clicks. We hardly use the keyboard shortcut keys to perform even the simplest of the actions. For example, to open My Computer, we would use the mouse to first click on Start and then select My Computer rather than using the shortcut keys provided on keyboard itself. The aim of this article is to remind all the readers about various shortcut keys available on keyboard and how they can be used to perform various actions.

We all have forgotten about the DOS days when GUI and mouse was not available. Every operation on computer was performed through the keys available on keyboard. I have tried to list down some of the basic operations that we do on computer in our day to day life and what all shortcut keys available on keyboard can be used to perform such actions.

1. To open the Start menu - Ctrl + Esc or Press Windows key

2. To switch to the desktop - Windows + D

3. To open Run dialog box - Windows + R

4. To open Control Panel - Windows + C

5. To open My Computer - Windows + E

6. To search for a file or folder - Windows + F

7. To make a text as bold if working in any Microsoft application such as word, excel, PowerPoint or outlook - Ctrl + B

8. To make a text as italic if working in any Microsoft application such as word, excel, PowerPoint or outlook - Ctrl + I

9. To underline a text if working in any Microsoft application such as word, excel, PowerPoint or outlook - Ctrl + U

10. To select everything if working in any Microsoft application such as word, excel, PowerPoint or outlook - Ctrl + A

11. To undo something if working in any Microsoft application such as word, excel, PowerPoint or outlook - Ctrl + Z

12. To save a word document (or any other file be it excel, notepad etc.) - Ctrl + S

13. To copy a selected text - Ctrl + C

14. To cut a selected text - Ctrl + X

15. To paste a copied text - Ctrl + V

16. To open Find dialog box if working in any Microsoft application such as word, excel, PowerPoint or outlook - F3

17. To close current window - Alt + F4

18. To rename a file or folder - F2. This will place the cursor at the beginning of the original text to be renamed.

19. To start slide show in powerpoint - F5

20. To refresh a browser window - F5

21. To move the cursor to address bar in IE browser window - F6

22. To perform spellcheck if working in any Microsoft application such as word, excel, powerpoint or outlook - F7

23. To change text from upper case to lower case or vice versa in MS Word - Shift + F3

24. To navigate between different windows open on the computer - Alt + Tab

25. To navigate between different tabs on same browser window - Ctrl + Tab

26. To go to the start of any document or browser page - Ctrl + Home

27. To go to the end of any document or browser page - Ctrl + End

28. To go to beginning of current line - Home

29. To go to end of current line - End

30. To select text from current cursor position to beginning of the line - Shift + Home

31. To select text from current cursor position to end of the line - Shift + End

32. To delete a file or a folder permanently without sending it to recycle bin - Shift + Delete

33. To check a checkbox - spacebar

34. To lock the computer - Windows + L

35. To move to parent folder - backspace

36. To maximize the current active window - Alt + Spacebar and then press X

37. To minimize the current active window - Alt + Spacebar and then press N

38. To restore the current active window - Alt + Spacebar and then press R
