University of Mysore history


mysore university logoUniversity of Mysore one of the finest university in India known for its higher education. This university is established by the Mysore Maharaja. During the time of July 27 1916 Maharaja Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV with the support of his Dewan and Sir M.Visvesvaraya this college was established successfully. Maharaja Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV was the first chancellor of this college. This is the first university in Karnataka and it is the sixth university in India. This university was recognized by University Grants Commission later and became autonomous status on the year 1956. At the time when the college is started only four departments were available namely Arts, Science, Engineering and Technology, and Medicine with a total of 28 subjects. Under this university only 12 colleges were administered by UOM Later the UOM offered courses such as B.A., B.Sc., Degree Courses and M.A., M.Sc., Courses. Diplomas in vocational subjects were also offered by UOM. Main campus was established later on 1960 at the western end of the Kukkarahalli Lake which covers area of 739 acres. The Headquarters of this university is located at the Crawford Hall which is eastern end of the lake. At this period two satellite campus were constructed for the purpose of post graduate course in UOM. Now this university is fully developed with 122 affiliated colleges and 5 Constituent Colleges. It is now equipped with 37 post graduate departments, 8 specialised research & training centres and 2 post graduate centers. Now the Mysore universities provide excellent education with providing all the facilities for students such as libraries with more than eight lakh books, 2,500 journal titles and 2 lakh volumes of journals. This campus is located at urban area with 4200 students.

Library
Library in UOM is well equipped with all features such as OPAC, Career Information Service Portal, E-Resources, E- Journals, E-Books, Databases. Campus Wide Access, Off Campus Access, University Library and Graduate Library. University library is very special one which is the oldest and largest library in our country. The graduate library provides facilities for students such as Study Carrels for Teachers, CD Browsing/Search Services, Study Center and Reading Room, Inter Library Lending, Reference Services, Xerox Facility, Extension Programmers. Career information service portal provides all the information about career such as Career Advice,UPSC Competitive Exams, KPSC Competitive Exams, SSC Competitive Exams, Defence Competitive Exams, LIC/GIC Competitive Exams, Bank Competitive Exams, Railway Competitive Exams, UGC Competitive Exams. This library is very useful to gain knowledge in all streams.

University Computer Center
This computer center is used for administration, faculty, Research Scholars and students. It also offers training programme in computer fields. This center conducts seminars, workshops and training programs which will be helpful to students.

UGC-CSIR (NET) Coaching Center
This is coaching center available in University of Mysore specially constructed for the benefit of backward class students of Karnataka. They coach for the competitive examinations. Coaching class conducted for competitive exams here are IAS, KAS, UGC and CSIR - NET and SET.

Students Welfare
The Directorate of Student Welfare is one of the facilities available in university of Mysore created for the welfare of students. The aim of student welfare is to give accommodation to PG students who gets admission. It gives facilities to the hostels in this university.

Prasaranga
Prasanga in UOM is used for publication purpose. So far above 2300 publications has been made here. English-Kannada Dictionary is produced in this prasaranga. The well known publication in prasaranga are Prabhudda Karnataka, Manavikaa Karnataka, Vignanaa Karnataka, myscience and mysociety.

Folklore Museum
This is the museum available in UOM. This is considered as one of the best university in Asia. Collections available in this museum are very precious which include artifacts and handicrafts. These were collected from various parts of ancient Karnataka.

Gandhi Bhavan
Gandhi Bhavan contains the collection of things that used by Mahatma Gandhiji Father of our Nation. This is the first Gandhi Bhavan constructed in India. The speciality of this Gandhi Bhavan is that it contains books that published during the Indian pre-independence period.
