    Schemes for the welfare of senior citizens by the Karnataka Government

    Government of Karnataka has initiated a number of Schemes for the welfare of the weaker sections of the society. Recognising its duty towards the elderly people this State has implemented a number of welfare measures. This resource enumerates some of the Schemes being implemented for the welfare of senior citizens.


    Maintaining well-being of the older persons is one of the goals of the Government of Karnataka. With this goal in view the Government has initiated and implemented a number of Schemes covering health, financial security, housing and shelter and protection of their life and property. Some of the Schemes are as follows:

    1. Scheme of Monthly Pension:



    According to this Scheme a monthly pension of Rs. 400/- is given to elderly persons

    Eligibility:

    The person desirous of getting pension should fulfil the following criteria to avail this facility:

    (a) The person should be of 65 years or above age

    (b) The combined yearly income of both the proposed pensioner and his/her spouse should not be more than Rs. 20,000/-. The income should be certified by the local revenue authority.

    Implementing agency:

    The state Revenue Department under their Sandhya Surkasha Scheme

    2. Old age Homes:



    The Karnataka Government provides financial assistance to Non-Government Organisations (NGOs). The basic thrust is that the NGOs should take care of senior citizens by providing them protection and all the basic amenities required at this elderly age.

    3. Help Lines for Senior Citizens:



    In order to redress the difficulties that the senior citizens may be facing the Police Department and selected NGOs help them through Help Lines. 14 such Help Lines are established at Bangalore, Gulbarga, Mysore, Hubli-Dharwad, Mangalore & Belgaum, Davangere, Raichur, Bellary and Shimoga.

    4. Issuing of Identity Cards:



    NGOs are identified by the Department of Women & Child Development to issue identity cards to the senior citizens. For this purpose Rs. 25/- can be collected by these NGOs to issue Identity Cards.

    For this purpose the senior citizen shall submit an application on the prescribed Performa and submit 2 photographs, proof of age and proof of residence.

    District Disabled Officer of the district concerned can help in providing more information.


    5. Concessional Bus Pass:



    The Karnataka State Roadways Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) provides concessional monthly bus passes to those elderly persons who have attained the age of 65 years. For this purpose the elderly person has to provide the proof of date of birth for which SSLC marks card, driving licence, passport, ration card, T.C. or even Voters Identity Card can be used.
